The funeral of Wojciech Grzeszek

On 1 July 2021 Lilia Funeral Home arranged the funeral of Wojciech Grzeszek. Mass, celebrated by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Kraków, Marek Jędraszewski, began at 10:00 in St Mary's Basilica in Kraków, concelebrated by the chaplains of “Solidarity” in Małopolska.

The ceremony was attended by his family and friends, representatives of public authorities and institutions, colleagues, union members from all over Poland, representatives of trade unions and community organisations, and colour parties.

During the funeral, Minister Wojciech Kolarski presented the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta to his son and read a letter from the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda.

After the Mass, the mourners went to Rakowicki Cemetery, where at 12:00 Wojciech Grzeszek was accompanied to his final resting place in the Avenue of the Distinguished. Prayers at the cemetery were led by Fr Władysław Palmowski. Those who spoke at the graveside included:

• the Voivode of Małopolska, Łukasz Kmita;
• the Chairman of the National Commission of the Solidarity trade union (NSZZ “Solidarność”), Piotr Duda;
• the Chairman of the Małopolska Regional Assembly, Jan Duda;
• the Deputy Chairman of the Małopolska Region of NSZZ “Solidarność”, Adam Gliksman;
• the Director of the Kraków branch of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), Dr hab. Filip Musiał, who read a letter from Dr Jarosław Szarek, President of the IPN.

The funeral ended with the singing of the Solidarity anthem, “Solidarni nasz jest ten dzień”.

Wojciech Grzeszek died on 25 June 2021, aged 67. From 1976 he worked at the National Printing House in Kraków, and from 1998, for six terms, he chaired the Małopolska Regional Board of NSZZ “Solidarność”. He also served five terms as a councillor of the Małopolska Regional Assembly.
