A Lilia hearse on a cemetery path

Transport of the deceased in Kraków

Lilia's hearse in a cemetery avenue

Lilia transports the deceased around the clock: from homes, hospitals and hospices in Kraków, throughout Poland and from abroad. Calls are taken by our funeral helpline on +48 507 111 211. If the death occurred at home, a medical certificate of death is needed before our team arrives. It is completed by a doctor or, if the death occurred during an emergency call-out, by the head of the emergency medical team; details in our guide.

International repatriation: bringing the deceased home to Poland

We bring the deceased home from abroad and help obtain the district head's permit and the Polish consul's certificate. The service includes:

  • Repatriation by specialist hearse or by air.

  • A transport coffin with a metal lining, as required by international regulations.

  • Safe transport of an urn after a cremation abroad.

  • Gathering the documents needed to claim the funeral grant from ZUS, the Polish Social Insurance Institution.

What affects the cost of transport

Transport within Poland is charged by the kilometre; transport from abroad is quoted for the specific route. The price depends on:

  • The distance and the route.

  • Type of transport: by road or by air, which involves additional cargo and airport fees.

  • Administrative costs: fees charged by mortuaries and hospitals abroad, and the cost of translating documents.

  • Accessories: a transport coffin or an urn.

Frequently asked questions about transporting the deceased

Can the deceased be transported at night or on a public holiday?

Yes. We transport the deceased day and night, seven days a week, including Sundays and public holidays. Calls are taken by our funeral helpline on +48 507 111 211.

Who arranges transport of the deceased to a Department of Forensic Medicine?

When a person has died or been killed in a public place, before burial they are taken to a Department of Forensic Medicine at the request of the competent authority, so that the cause of death can be established. Arranging this transport is the responsibility of the district (powiat). Once the Department of Forensic Medicine releases the body, we take the deceased onward, to a mortuary or to the place of the funeral.

What documents are needed to repatriate the deceased from abroad?

Bringing the deceased to Poland requires a permit from the district head (starosta) responsible for the place of burial, followed by a certificate from the Polish consul in the country where the death occurred. The other documents depend on that country. We help obtain both documents and gather the rest, and we provide a coffin with a metal lining for the journey.
