Headstones and tombs in Kraków

Types of headstones and tombs

Lilia Funeral Home helps families in Kraków choose a headstone or a family tomb, the stone and the wording of the inscription.

The type of headstone depends above all on the place of burial. We agree the scope of work individually for each grave and cemetery.

  • Single headstone: for one person, placed on an earth grave.
  • Double headstone: on a grave for two people, with space for two inscriptions.
  • Urn headstone: a slab or small monument on an urn grave.
  • Tomb: a brick-lined grave in which several people can be buried.

Stone, style and inscription

Granite is the most common choice for headstones. We discuss the type and colour of the stone, the style of the headstone, classic or modern, and the wording of the inscription with the family.

If the grave is to be shared by several people, it is worth leaving space for further inscriptions from the start.

Cemetery formalities

Placing or replacing a headstone is reported to the cemetery administration, and the decision is made by the person who holds the rights to the grave. Each cemetery has its own rules, including the permitted size of headstones, so it is worth checking them before choosing a design.

When to place a headstone

It is best to agree the date with the stonemason, who will assess the condition of the grave. A headstone that is to be in place before 1 November should be ordered well in advance.

How to order a headstone

The design, stone and dimensions depend on the particular grave and cemetery, so an order goes through four steps.

  1. Contact

Please call our office. It helps to know which cemetery and which section the grave is in.

  2. Discussing the design

Together we discuss the type of headstone, the stone, the style and the wording of the inscription.

  3. Individual quote

Based on the chosen design and scope of work, we prepare a quote for the specific order.

  4. Formalities

We explain which documents the cemetery administration will need.
